At PS/MS 47Q, we utilize Envisions 2020 Mathematics as a resource for teaching math along with The New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards. We also offer the Algebra Regents course for Grade 8 General Ed and ICT students.  Students learn mathematics best when they have opportunities to “do math”. Students must work on challenging problems, share their thinking with others, and use their thinking to build and deepen understanding. This process will provide our students with the skills needed to go to college or enter the workforce better prepared. 

All students are curious about the world in which they live, which makes them natural scientists. Science helps them make sense of the world around them. It provides opportunities for students to investigate this world and explain how and why things happen. As they engage in the work of scientists, they

• collect data
• construct explanations
• predict
• experiment
• reach conclusions, and
• communicate their discoveries

At PS/MS 47Q, we utilize the Amplify Science program along with The New York State Next Generation Science Learning Standards.  Students study physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, astronomy, and ecology. In our science classrooms, students develop an understanding of the interdependence of living things as well as a respect for nature. They study their local environment but they think globally. They use problem-solving skills to find solutions to a variety of real-world problems. They share ideas, work together, read informational texts, make presentations and challenge each other to think creatively. They integrate reading, writing, listening, discussion, and mathematics as they learn science. We also offer the Living Environment Regents course for Grade 8 General Ed and ICT students.

The goal of social studies is to make sure that all students graduate from high school prepared for college, a career, and a future as a productive adult.  To support teachers and students, the NYCDOE Social Studies Department has produced a curriculum called Passport to Social Studies. New York City educators created it for our students, and it is meant to prepare children for the global community.  Students use rich content, themes and big ideas to learn history, geography, economics, civics, citizenship and government. They also use important skills to “think like historians.”  Teachers also include literacy in the social studies classroom. This helps students use evidence from text when reading, writing, and discussing.

At PS/MS 47Q we utilize HMH Into Reading (Gr K-5) and Into Literature (Gr 6-8)  for Reading and Writing.  We also utilize Fundations (K-2) Phonics program and Heggerty Phonemic Awareness (K-3).  These curriculum materials are aligned to the Next Generation Standards.  With the multiple benchmark periods throughout the year, we have been able to form strategic plans to ensure students are improving and moving toward grade level expectations.  Through action research, data, and attention to methods of instructions, we aim to provide all students with opportunities for powerful and joyful engagement with Literacy.  This work is centered on student agency as well as the 5 pillars of literacy.  Our goal is that students will be able to transfer their learning across the curriculum and throughout their lives.
